[edit] Summaries
Set in the 1960s and straddling across 3 generations, the story traces the socioeconomic developments and major events in Hong Kong over the last 50 years.
In the 60's of the New China, the rural village was still in great poverty. Mantang (Poon Chi-Man), the husband of Shuixi (Fung Bo-bo), went to Hong Kong alone to make a living and soon lost all contacts with his family. Shuixi therefore took her three children to Hong Kong to find her husband.
Upon her arrival, she discovered that Mantang was already married to another woman, Naixin (Wu Mei-yee). Naixin initially pretended to accept Shuixi and her children to live under the same roof but was actually seeking a chance to throw them out.
Mantang became dissatisfied with his booming business and ended up heavily in debt. He then escaped to Taiwan. Thanks to Shuixi's excellence in needlework, the family passed through its financial difficulty safely.
Despite the hardship, she continued to hold a positive outlook and was determined to overcome all odds to raise her children single-handedly. Her endurance and perseverance paid off but love and hatred continued to dominate the newer generations.
The eldest son, Gao Xing (Marco Lo), became a fame-seeking and practical person. The eldest daughter, Gao Gui (Tin Yui-Nei), decided to leave the family by marrying an aged rich man.
Shuixi tried to dissuade Gao Gui but consequently deepened their misunderstanding.
